I think we can all agree that there is little better than a relaxing day spent in paradise. This spring, consider ditching the breathtaking Hawaiian beaches and fruity cocktails and opt instead for a day spent unwinding with your closest friends at a local winery. Located on Hawaii Island, just five minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and ten minutes from the Kilauea Overlook – is a picturesque winery perfect for a day trip with your significant other or closest girlfriends.
The unique Volcano Winery is located at 4,000 feet in elevation on the slopes of an active volcano and nestled between two volcanoes on lava-covered land that allows Symphony Grape Vines to flourish.
Founded in 1986, Volcano Winery is the only winery on Hawaii Island, and one of only three commercial wineries in Hawaii. It is also the southernmost winery in the United States.
With eight acres of vineyards and organic teas, you won’t find a winery quite like this one anywhere in the world - the property is home to a collapsed lava tube the owners hope to transform into a wine cellar.
Tropical fruits – like yellow guava, star fruit or the exotic jaboticaba berry – are blended with traditional wine grapes to create vibrant wines that perfectly capture the Hawaiian spirit.
Inspired by "volcanic fire and the bounty of the island," the winery also offers a traditional grape wines - including a Pinot Grigio, Symphony Mele, and Pinot Noir. They even offer an innovative tea infused wine.
Volcano Winery’s unique wines are only available in Hawaii - but don’t worry, you can purchase wine during your visit to pack in your luggage, or have shipped back home. Wines typically range in price from $16 to $70,
Wine tastings are offered daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. - no reservation necessary. The tasting will run your $5 for a standard tasting and $8 for a premium one, and is done in a laid-back atmosphere perfect for the whole gang - from someone who won’t spend more than $10 on a bottle of wine to the biggest wine snob you know.
You can also simply enjoy a glass of wine while gazing out at Mauna Loa in the picnic area, or check out Volcano Winery’s gift shop - home to souvenirs, apparel, and local food items.
